Book Group for Hertbeats Members
In January 2021 Hertbeats member Elaine O’Brien suggested forming a book group. It was announced in the February to March 2021 issue of ‘Hearts and Minds’ newsletter. The text of that article is repeated below.
One of the great pleasures in life is being able to read, and lockdowns and tiers have certainly given us plenty of opportunity for that. With this in mind I thought it would be good to start a new Hertbeats group, and I am proposing a Hertbeats Book Group. It is open to all members and I encourage anyone interested give it a try. It would use the popular Zoom video conferencing using smart phone, iPad or computer.
The style of Hertbeats Book Group will depend on its members, but to start with I envisage:
- The meetings will be informal, with everyone able to contribute. It is good if people have different views – it makes the discussion more interesting. However, the normal rules of tolerance and respect must be observed.
- The format will be a monthly meeting, conducted on Zoom. I will email an invitation each month, containing a link to join the meeting, and you just click on the link and follow the instructions. You do not need to download an app or a program to join the meeting.
Who, When, What, How and Where
Who: Every Heartbeats member is welcome to join
When: Every second Thursday of the month at 2:00 pm for about an hour
What: Meetings will be an appraisal and discussion on a specific book
How: Email Elaine at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone her on 01582 622888. A few days before each meeting Elaine will send out a reminder and advise how to get onto the Zoom meeting. Its very easy! Information will also be shared on a WhatsApp group.
Where: From the comfort of your home.

Members selected ‘Trio’ by William Boyd for discussion at the next meeting. Participants are encouraged to read the book before the meeting.
William Boyd, who was born in 1952, is the author of fifteen highly acclaimed, bestselling novels and five collections of stories. Trio is set in the 1960s and focuses on the lives of three people making a movie in Brighton. It is described as exhilarating and tender. The author is referred to as ‘one of Britain’s best-loved writers’.
